The ICDS Programme was launched in District Shopian during the year 1982 starting from ICDS Block Keller.
At present there are 02 ICDS Projects functioning in the district under the overall supervision of District Programme Officer Shopian .
All the projects cover 566 Anganwadi Centers with an equal number of Anganwadi Workers and Anganwadi Helpers.
It is the foremost symbol of commitment to children and Nursing Mothers, a response to the challenge of providing pre-school non formal Education on one hand and breaking the vicious cycle of Mal-nutrition, Morbidity, reduced learning and Mortality on the other.
The beneficiaries under the scheme include children in the age group of 0-6 years, adolescent girls, Pregnant and lactating mothers.
It is a National Programme for which the expenditure on account of various components like Salary of Staff, Honorarium to Anganwadi Workers and Anganwadi helpers and non Nutrition items are borne by the Union Government and State Government at 90% and 10% respectively
The main aim of the said ICDS programme is to minimize the infant mortality and morbidity rate in addition to enhance the cognitive development of children at the gross root level particularly out of the backward classes. Besides, the scheme seeks:-
1.To improve the Nutrition and Health status of children in the age group of 0-6 years
2.To lay the foundation for proper psychological, physical and social Development of the child;
3.To achieve effective co-ordination of policy and implementation amongst the various Departments to promote child development and;
4.To enhance the capacity of the Mother to look after the normal Health and Nutritional needs of the child through proper nutrition and health education.
The following package of services is delivered under ICDS Programme
by the department to the identified/ registered beneficiaries at their door steps through the network of A.W. Centers.
1.Supplementary Nutrition
2.Immunization in coordination with Health Department.
3.Health checkup
4.Referral Services
5.Nutrition and Health Education to nursing mothers and pregnant ladies.
6.Pre-school education.
