The Kashmir Handicrafts Industry has a unique place in the world Handicrafts scenario. The industry has an important place in the economical Development of Jammu and Kashmir State. The Handicrafts industry of J&K has a world-wide attraction for its designs, quality, crafts man ship and their functional utility presently in absence of large scale industrial set-up in J&K State. The industry is pollution free and pioneer industry of state. The industry is providing employment directly or indirectly to a large number of people of the state.

In the overall export of our nation the crafts like carpet, crewel, shawal embroidery, wood-carving and paper-mac hie have played a significant role in earning the foreign exchange. The carpet industry  in Kashmir has a special place in the international market. This may not be out of place to mention here that the carpet  industry of Kashmir changed the economical condtion of the state since 1965.

District Shopian came into existence in April 2007 and the office of Assistant Director, Handicrafts Shopian started functioning from October 2007. As compared to other districts of state the number of training centers functioning in the District is very low. The training is being provided to female folk in the crafts like crewel , embroidery, sozni embroidery, staple embroidery, chain stitch and carpet weaving.
