EDUCATION DEPARTMENT

School Education is important segment of the educational delivery system considerably contributing to the development scenario in the UT. While elementary education provides the basis that’s reinforced at the secondary tier, the plus two constitutes a core component where the teeming thousands of young boys and girls fan out into different career choices and options.

In the recent years, School Education has recorded an unprecedented thrust, particularly in the elementary segment. The SSA has come as a boon, as it were, unleashing a series of initiatives seeking universal enrollment and retention, reduction of social, regional and gender gaps, mainstreaming of the children with special needs and promotion of quality parameters.
At the district Level, there is a Chief Education Officer assisted by Dy. Chief Education Officer and District Education Planning officer. Besides Principals of Higher Secondary Schools, Zonal Education Officers, Headmasters of Secondary School are also directly under the control of Chief Education Officers.

At Zonal Level, we have a Zonal Education Officer in each Zone who is responsible for Elementary Education. Zonal Education Planning Officer of the rank of Headmaster of High School assists zonal Education Officer. The Zonal Education Planning officer besides attending to the Headquarter, also assists ZEO in the matters related to Planning, Statistics and Inspection.

In the National Educational Scenario, J&K UT is subsumed as educationally backward in reference to the established indices namely literacy rate, teacher pupil ratio , dropout rate and the absorption pattern of the educated persons. The disquieting features are low literacy rate, higher drop-out rate, gender disparity and mismatch between education and employment. The J&K UT strictly adheres to the National Education Policy and with the exponential growth of the institutional framework and reach of services as a consequence of sustained investment folio through plan strategy, improvement in every parameter is visible. The improvement is more pronounced in the field of girls literacy. Education is one of the most valuable means in achieving gender equality and empowerment of women.

The Education Department with broaden objectives of Universalization of Elementary Education, Extension of School facilities with in every school, development of infrastructure and providing incentive structure to improve enrolment and retention in implementing various schemes through the following sectors.
Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Teacher Education, Direction and Administration.

The main thrust is to develop the infrastructure facilities for the schools particularly those schools which have recently been up-graded besides introducing the computer education to all the Higher Secondary Schools as one of the subjects.
